MUN 101

By Love, Serve One Another

There are several things that you need to know while attending a MUN, there are certain technicalities and procedures that must be catered to or you lose out on the chances of wining an award. The primary step is writing up a position paper, a position paper is based on the research that you do about the country that has been allotted to you. This paper shows the stance of you country whether it is For or Against the Motion, there are normally two topics given and one is decided upon by popular vote, you need to write a position paper for both. You will be better off for including how your country has been involved in that issue and how it has effected it or been affected by the issue. However, not too much detail, just a preview of what is going to be coming from you.

You also need to familiarize yourself with the Moderated and UnModerated Caucuses. The moderated ones are with all the fancy terms for addressing and the rules and procedures of a real UN house of debate. The Unmoderated Caucuses are for giving the delegates a free reign so they can make allies and sort out their resolutions and such.

Another important thing is the MUN jargon. You better know things like Point of Order, Point of Parliamentary Inquiry and Point of Personal Privilege. Not knowing might make you feel left out. You must always refer to yourself and to the others as a third person, i.e. “The Delegate of Country XYZ”, ever by name and certainly never by the first person. Kindly, also keep in mind common courtesy while speaking to someone.

The final thing on a motion is to make a resolution. The resolutions are sorted out in the UnModerated Caucuses and are written according to a set standard (Please see how to write a Resolution). Once a Resolution is passed, the next Motion is introduced for Debate.

Happy Munning!
